*Maj.General Samuel S. Curtis who had recently assumed command of the Department of Southwest Missouri from Maj. Gen. Fremont and immediately marched to re-enter Springfield after General Price had regained Missouri territory as far north as Osceola. Curtis' large army prompted Price and McCulloch, who were not cooperating with each other, to withdraw from Springfield back into Arkansas 13 Feb 1862. In spite of a bitterly cold winter the Federal Army continued to dog the confederates into Arkansas. At Cross Hollows, AR they found McCulloch's huge encampment abandoned. At the same time, Maj.General Van Dorn was appointed to command the confederate forces over the arguing Price and McCulloch. Now fully in charge, Van Dorn ended the confederate retreat and prepared to meet the Union forces at Pea Ridge, about 12 miles from Sugar Creek. Curtis chose Sugar Creek hollow, between Sugar Creek and Pea Ridge for a defensive stand and his four Divisions for Van Dorn's army to attack.

*John G. Shawbell  Blacksmith, 9th KS Cavalry was Absent Without Leave Dec 1862. Re: Company Roster. However, original Company Muster Records indicate that John was present for duty throughout the year 1862. Even though Muster Roll was written he was AWOL Dec. 1862. Probably excused: His brother-in-law, Solomon MARTZ 12th KS Infantry had died of typhoid in Paloa, KS on the 14th Dec. He probably went to Paloa and brought Solomon's body back to Ottumwa for funeral and burial, and also stayed for the birth of his daughter, Clementine on the 20th Dec 1862.
